PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team got a goal from Abdurahim Leigh in the opening minute of its game against Shoreline, setting the tone for a 7-0 win that keeps the Pirates tied for first place in the North Region.
Leigh, the Pirates’ leading scorer, finished with two gaols and an assist while Manny Garcia had two goals. Tsubasa Abe had a goal and an assist, while Fin Muotune and Brian Guzman each had goals.
Adding assists were Matthew Enrique and Brandon Wagner (Sequim High School).
The win gave the Pirates a record of 6-2-1 (19 points) in the North with the most wins of any team in the ultra-competitive region. Peninsula finds itself in a three-way tie for first with Everett and Bellevue, which have identical 5-1-4 records, also good for 19 points. Whatcom is one point behind at 5-2-3.
Peninsula is done for the season with Everett but has a critical game next Saturday at Bellevue. That game might end up for the North championship. Everett beat Peninsula 3-2 earlier this season.
Next, however, the Pirates (9-3-1 overall) host Edmonds (1-8, 1-10) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at Wally Sigmar Field in the Pirates’ final home game of the year. The women won Saturday over Shoreline via forfeit as the Dolphins suspended their season due to a lack of players. The Peninsula women, also battling to get in first place at 7-0-2 (12-0-2 overall) next play at home at 2 p.m. Wednesday against Edmonds (0-7, 2-9-1).
Skagit Valley is in first at 8-0-1 in the North with a 0-0 tie against Peninsula earlier this season. The Pirates get a second crack at Skagit Valley on Oct. 25 with the North championship likely on the line.
