GOLF: Scramble benefits music programs at Port Townsend

Port Townsend senior golfer Jacob Madison is putting on a tournament to raise funds for a high school band and orchestra trip to Los Angeles in April.

Madison doubles as a drummer in the school band and the three-time state golf tournament participant is organizing the event to help fund the combined band/orchestra trip to see the Los Angeles Symphony perform and participate in a group recording session at Capitol Records’ famous Studio A.

The PTHS Symphonic Band Golf Tournament, a four-person scramble format event, will be held at Port Townsend Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with a 10 a.m. tournament start.

The cost is $35 per person.

To register, visit the course or call 360-385-4547.

Public play at Sunland

Sunland Golf and Country Club has made a couple of additions to its offerings.

The Sequim course has long been open to the public on weekends, but now those weekends begin at noon Fridays.

Green fees for 18 holes are $40, with twilight rates dropping that price down to $28 starting at 2 p.m. each day.

Carts also are available for $16 per rider.

The Eastside Eatery

Sunland also has added a new restaurant, The Eastside Eatery at Sunland or (T.E.E.S), which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coffee, beer, tea, fruit juices and other drinks are available from the new eatery.

Aeration discount

The Cedars at Dungeness announced it will aerify its greens Monday and Tuesday and Oct. 1. As a result, the course will offer a 15 percent discount on all green fees from Tuesday through Oct. 6.

The USGA says that aeration primarily is performed to control organic matter — i.e., decaying roots and grass stems — relieve soil compaction, stimulate root growth and improve drainage. If organic matter becomes too thick, it acts like a sponge and holds water at the surface after rain or irrigation. Excessive organic matter also inhibits root growth, reduces oxygen levels in the soil, encourages disease and eventually can lead to turf failure.

So look at the process as a little preventative maintenance to keep your course looking and playing as it should.

Go Big Tournament

The Cedars at Dungeness will host its annual Go Big Golf Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The event includes oversized everything — from 8-inch cups on all 18 holes, turkey legs, and 22-ounce beer, soda and water.

Format is a one-person scramble.

The cost is $70 for the public, $47 for members and employees, and includes green fees, cart and range balls.

For more information, phone 360-683-6344.

Nightoberfest

The Cedars at Dungeness will host Nightoberfest, a round of glow-in-the-dark golf open to all ability levels on Saturday, Oct. 12.

A party with hosted appetizers will kick things off at 5 p.m.

The two-person scramble format event on an 18-hole course made up entirely of par-3s will begin with a 6:30 p.m. shotgun start.

The cost is $65 per person for the public, $50 for Cedars members and employees.

Green fees, party, awards and equipment are included in the fee.

The most outrageous outfit will win an award.

Glow golf balls and glow sticks are included, players should bring their own golf clubs, flashlights and lanterns.

Call 360-683-6344 to register or for more information.
