GOLF: Chimacum grads giving back to the game

JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS are coming to Port Ludlow Golf Course this summer and the instructors are Nathan Browning and Kevin Miller, a pair of Chimacum High School grads who recently graduated from the University of Idaho’s PGA Golf Management Program.

Miller and Browning both played high school golf for the Cowboys at Port Ludlow, so it’s a return to their old stomping grounds for the pair.

They are focusing most of their golfing energies this summer on kids aged 6 (as of June 29) to 11, or those entering second through fifth grades in school this fall.

Miller and Browning will use the Starting New At Golf (SNAG) method to instruct the kids.

SNAG is similar to a baseball player first learning to play the game by playing Tee ball in smaller fields.

The pair will instruct students in proper mechanics, develop motor skills, teach basic rules and etiquette, use group activities and focus on fun.

Clinics will be offered July 10-12, July 24-26, Aug. 7-9 and Aug. 21-23 and run from noon to 2 p.m. each day.

The cost is $90, with a hot dog or sandwich and drink included each day. Kids also will have the chance to win prizes.

Browning and Miller also will hold weekly clinics for players ages 11-16 with the intention of prepping these players for high school golf.

Whether or not the students decide to play for a high school team, Miller and Browning say they will make it their mission to introduce the sport, make it enjoyable and make them better all-around players.

They will teach the short game, including pitching, chipping and bunker shots, plus putting, the full swing, rules and etiquette and how to play the game out on the course.

Clinics will start Thursday, June 22 and run through Sept. 7.

The clinics will start at noon, except for July 27 and Aug. 10, which will both start at 3 p.m.

The cost is $20 per session, and if players participate in at least nine sessions, the rest are free.

For more information on either set of junior clinics, phone the course at 360-437-0272.

SkyRidge anniversary

SkyRidge Golf Course will celebrate its 14th anniversary with a two-person modified Chapman SkyRidge Anniversary Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 17.

Each player will hit a tee shot, then hit their partners’ ball on the second shot. From there, it becomes alternate shot, using the better of the two second shots. The player whose second shot wasn’t used will hit the third shot and the teams will continue to alternate shots until the ball is holed.

A 9 a.m. shotgun start will open play.

Cost is $70 per team and includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, a hamburger lunch after play, KPs and long putt challenge.

A horse race contest is possible after lunch.

An optional honey pot is $30 per team.

Gross and net winners will be crowned.

Cart rental is $15 per seat.

For more information, phone SkyRidge at 360-683-3673.

Bob Cup sponsors

The Bob Cup, a second annual golf tournament inspired by the memory of a beloved husband and a family’s shared interest in providing recognition and support to people with developmental disabilities, will be held at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday, July 29.

The Bob Cup honors the memory of Robert “Bob” Raymond Duncan, a prominent member of the Sequim community who passed away in November 2015. Bob’s family were among the original families responsible for the creation and ownership of the Dungeness Course and Bob was an avid golfer himself.

The Memorial Tournament will kick off with player/team check-ins between 7:30 and 8:30 am and a shotgun start at 9 am. Teams will be competing for one-year ownership of the Bob Cup and to have their names engraved on the cup.

Contests to challenge and reward players are planned, Alaska Airlines has donated two round-trip tickets anywhere the airline serves (except Cuba). A barbecue lunch will follow play

Sponsors wishing to be on the tournament poster need to register by Monday. But sponsor will be accepted past that date.

Sponsors can download a form at www.clallammosaic.org/bob-cup/ or call Mary Jane Duncan at 360-683-6314.

To register in advance, players can sign up at the above link.

The cost for advance registered players is $100 per person, which includes both the day of golf and the afternoon barbecue. For those wanting to come to the barbecue only, the cost is $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the event.

Proceeds from the Cup will support Clallam Mosaic, an organization that provides individuals with developmental disabilities can go to have a sense of belonging and where they can continue to grow rather than lose precious skills they have worked so hard to achieve.

Clallam Mosaic provides year-round educational, recreational and leisure opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities and hosts the county’s Parent to Parent chapter which supports families and caregivers.
