GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim saves best for last in win over North Kitsap

Port Angeles, Chimacum pick up wins

POULSBO — Sequim resumed its winning ways with an important 55-45 Olympic League girls basketball victory on the road over North Kitsap.

The Wolves fought through foul trouble for post Jayla Julmist and a 14-point first-half performance from the Vikings’ Noey Barreith to earn the big road win.

Sequim trailed 29-23 at halftime.

“This was a close game the whole way, but we battled hard,” Wolves coach Linsay Rapelje said. “We had to make some adjustments with Jayla in foul trouble, but showed composure and pulled ahead [with a] good lead in the end of the fourth quarter. I’m very proud of our win tonight.”

Rapelje said Julmist posted a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three steals.

Hope Glasser and Kalli Wiker led Sequim with 12 points apiece. Glasser added eight rebounds and five assists.

The Wolves (4-0, 8-3) visit Olympic (1-3, 5-5) on Friday.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders opened up a 14-point lead at halftime, weathered a small Trojans’ run and kept a firm grip on the lead in picking up an Olympic League road victory.

“Olympic did an admirable job of coming back from a tough first half offensively,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said. “They cut our lead to nine points in the second half, but we fought back and finished the game well down the stretch.”

Jaida Wood led the Riders offensively with 18 points while shooting 50 percent from the field, according to Poindexter.

“Millie Long also shot the ball well, with her 15 points coming on 54-percent shooting from the field,” he said. “As a team, we scored well inside, hitting 15 of 29 from 2-point range, but struggled with 3-point shots, only [making] 6 of 30. Olympic’s zone defense caused us to settle a bit too much for the outside shots, but our inside game gave us enough cushion for the win.”

Poindexter said the team’s overall defensive and rebuilding effort was solid and led by Myra Walker and Eve Burke’s play throughout the game.

Port Angeles (4-0, 8-3) hosts Bremerton (0-4, 2-8) at 7 p.m. Friday.

FORKS — A cold shooting night sunk the Spartans in an Evergreen League-opening loss on Tuesday.

“Our shooting,” Spartans coach David Hurn said when asked what went wrong for Forks.

“We’ve had games where we’ve shot well and games where it just hasn’t been there. We havent gotten into a groove there. We shot 18 percent from the floor and you aren’t going to win too many games when your percentage is down that low.”

The Spartans did get some offensive rebounds but couldn’t convert those extra opportunities.

“A game like this you expect us to be able to crash the boards and we did get 14 offensive rebounds, but we only had three second-chance points,” Hurn said.

One of Hurn’s team goals entering the season was to play with more pace and he said Forks would try and go down that route going forward.

“We have to pick up the tempo, have to get more shots up and create a little more pressure,” Hurn said.

The Spartans (0-1, 4-5) visit Neah Bay (4-4) tonight.

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys utilized their height and size advantage inside to their benefit in a win over the Loggers on Tuesday.

“I thought we did the right things,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said. “We worked the ball inside and got good production from our posts and did a good job of taking advantage of our size and strength difference.”

Jadeah Nordberg led the way inside with 15 points and eight rebounds, four on the offensive glass.

Younger sister Natalia Nordberg added nine points, as did Diamond Young.

“Our posts stayed patient, made sure they had sealed their defenders and made the moves that were available to them,” Huntingford said. “I was happy to see that.

Huntingford said Katrina Crawford, Ava Amos and Amiyah Fisher all did a good job of rebounding.

Katie Clark had 10 points for the Cowboys. “She did a good job of controlling the offense,” Huntingford said. “She also displayed some good leadership.”

Chimacum (0-2, 4-4) hosts Quilcene (3-2, 4-4) tonight.
