GIRLS BASKETBALL: East Jefferson falters in fourth quarter

Neah Bay takes down Forks 72-45

PORT TOWNSEND — Up by one point after three quarters, East Jefferson couldn’t close out South Whidbey in the final frame in a 38-32 nonleague girls basketball game Monday at Bruce Blevins Gym.

Alyssa Vandenberg led the Rivals with 17 points, including knocking down 7 of 10 free-throw attempts.

South Whidbey’s Isabelle Ward got loose for six of her game-high 20 points in the fourth as the Falcons overcame East Jefferson down the stretch.

Senior Maddy Harris added seven for the Rivals.

East Jefferson (1-2, 1-5) is scheduled to host Granite Falls this afternoon, but that game is likely to be postponed due to snow.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils got the better of their West End counterparts for the second time in a week, but this one wasn’t anywhere near as close as Neah Bay’s 54-50 win Dec. 12.

“They came out hot and playing hard and fast and moving the basketball on us and knocking down open shots in Neah Bay fashion,” Forks coach David Hurn said.

“We were flat. We were slow on our rotations, got killed on backside help defense in our zone and it carried over to our offense as well.

“We weren’t aggressive on our drives and we only made 13 field goals. I bet we shot less than 20 percent from the field and you can’t play that poorly all around against a team like Neah Bay that will run you out of the gym.”

Allie Greene led all scorers with 15 points for the Red Devils (3-1), while teammate Ryana Moss added 14 and Amber Swan had 10. Neah Bay is set to play Moses Lake Christian on Dec. 28

Kadie Wood and Keira Johnson had 11 points apiece to lead the Spartans (4-0, 5-3). Forks is scheduled to host Onalaska at 6 p.m. Thursday.
