CROSS COUNTRY: Port Angeles girls dominate district; PA’s Larson wins race

UNIVERSITY PLACE — The Port Angeles cross-country girls served notice that they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with at the state 2A meet, easily winning the District III 2A championship by a huge margin.

The Roughriders got five girls in the top 33 and two girls in the top 5, including race champion Lauren Larson.

Larson won her sixth race of the year in 19 minutes, 20.80 seconds, taking the race by a relatively safe margin of 8 seconds. Last year, Larson came in fourth at district in 20:39, so she shaved more than a minute off her time from last year, held at the same venue at Chambers Creek.

Finishing fourth was Sequim freshman Riley Pyeatt in 19:31.60 and fifth was Kynzie DeLeon of Port Angeles at 19:44.20.

All seven of the Riders runners finished in the top 47 (out of 121 competitors). The top five finishers counted toward the team score. Port Angeles’ Ella Holland was 16th at 22:03.80, Kaylee Helgeson, 22nd at 22:13.30, Kathryn Guttormsen 33rd at 22:44.80, Emma Weaver 45th at 23:26.20, Jenna McGoff 47th at 23:28.20.

Port Angeles finished with 75 team points, well ahead of second-place Highline at 161 (like golf, a lower score is better in cross country.). Sequim finished 15th with 316 points.

Because they won district, the Roughrider girls get to send five members of their team to the 2A state meet Saturday in Pasco. Interestingly, as individuals, all five of those girls — Larson, DeLeon, Holland, Helgeson and Guttormsen — qualified for state anyway.

Pyeatt also qualified for state.

Class 1A

In the 1A meet, Chimacum’s Rachel Matthes finished seventh with a time of 21:16.20 and Port Townsend’s Anika Avelino finished 10th with a time of 21:29.00 and they both qualified for state. They actually run together on Port Townsend’s team, but for the purposes of state and district, Matthes runs for her home school, Chimacum.

PA boys fourth

In the boys race, the Roughriders finished fourth as a team and they also qualified to go to state as a team.

Sequim’s Murray Bingham finished third with a time of 16:52.40, improving on his ninth-place finish from last year.

The Riders got four runners in the top 35 and five in the top 45. They were led by Cameron Butler, who finished 12th with a time of 17:29.30 and Thomas Shaw, who finished 19th with a time of 17:42.50. Gabriel Long finished 23rd with a time of 17:52.00 and Adam Borde 35th with a time of 18:06.00.

Sequim just missed out making state as a team, finishing eighth — the top six go to state. However, the Wolves will send three individuals boys to state — Murray, Liam Byrne, who finished 22nd with a time of 17:48.20 and Jazen Bartee, who finished 42nd with a time of 18:15.90.

PT boys do well

The Port Townsend boys got four runners in the top 12 and finished third as team. All four of those runners will go to state. The Redhawks were led by Nathan Cantrell, who came in second with a time of 16:59. Teammate Gabe Petrick came in fifth with a time of 17:24.70. Kincaid Gould was 10th with a time of 17:45.50 and Seamus Fraser 12th with a time of 17:54.70.
