PORT ANGELES — The defending NWAACC champion Peninsula College men’s soccer team is reloading for the 2014 season.
That team will include three outstanding recruits in Trevan Estrellado and Micah Weller of Cheney and Chris Chertude of Portland, Ore.
Estrellado, a 5-10 midfielder from Cheney High School, was a three-year high school starter who helped the Blackhawks win a high school state championship in 2013. He was named to the All-State Second Team. He was a Washington state Olympic Development Program pool player and was on the Hawaii and Idaho State Olympic Development Program teams.
“We have been watching Trevan for three years now,” Peninsula men’s coach Andrew Chapman said. “His sister, Bri, is just finishing with our women’s team.
“Trevan is a quick player who is very explosive in his first few steps. He can play inside or outside midfield and has the ability to play box to box on the field.
“He hits a great free kick, which is something we have struggled with over the past few years.”
Weller, a 6-0 forward midfielder from Cheney High School, was named First Team All-State and scored the winning goal in the 2013 state championship. He also is a Washington State Olympic Development Program pool player.
“Micah is another player we have been watching for some years,” Chapman said.
“He is very strong on the ball with very good speed. He is able to get up and down the field and understands his runs very well. He can score goals while also setting his teammates up.”
Chertude, a 6-2 central midfielder from Jesuit High School in Portland, helped the Crusaders win Oregon State soccer championships in 2010 and again in 2013.
He played for the Portland Timbers U-18 Academy team and also the Oregon Olympic Development Program team.
He was named Player of the Year and also won the Golden Boot award at Jesuit.
“Chris is a very strong player who understands the game very well,” Chapman said.
“He has great size and great technical ability, which is a tough combo to find. He sees the field very well.
“The thing we really like about Chris is he is a true competitor. He is always willing to work hard and has the ability to take a game over.”
Women’s Basketball
Four named all-academic
PORT ANGELES — Alison Knowles, Pherrari Brumbaugh, Brandi Hale and Candi Roland were named to the 2013-14 NWAACC All-Academic Women’s Basketball Team, as announced this week by the conference.
Only sophomore athletes are eligible for the academic honor and head coach Alison Crumb says she’s pleased to have four of her five sophomores qualify this year.
“All four of these ladies have worked very hard on the court and in the classroom,” Crumb said. “It is no wonder that they are capable of this feat, because they are naturally diligent and hardworking individuals.
“Basketball is a huge time commitment and we ask a lot of our players, and the fact that these sophomores were diligent and dedicated enough to accomplish this task is a testament to the type of individuals they are and what great leaders they have been for our freshman.”
Crumb added that she is very proud of her players graduating with their associates degrees in just two years, which is no longer a common accomplishment for college students.
“All of our sophomores will be getting their degree in the spring and this is important for our program,” Crumb said.
“We want our freshman to understand the value of education and when they see their peers excel and exceed in the classroom, and on the basketball court, then it becomes a possible goal for our young players.
“I appreciate all the time and energy Alison Knowles, Brandi Hale, Cassandra Roland and Pherrari Brumbaugh have put into our program and into this school. They have been excellent to work with and more importantly are a great example of what a student-athlete should be.”
