COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men, women shine in all-star game

TUKWILA — A total of 10 Peninsula College men’s and women’s soccer players competed Sunday in the Northwest Athletic Conference all-star games.

The North Region all-stars joined with the East Region all-stars to play a team made up of all-stars from the South Region and the West Region.

Shu Kato, Dylan Pauw, Pau Vivas Ayala, Tim Deser and Fernando Tavares were named to the North-East team, which was coached by Peninsula College head men’s coach Jake Hughes. Tavares had a pair of goals to help lead the North-East team to a 4-0 win.

Peninsula College’s Kenzie Banner, Frida Markstrom, Rylee Sims, Chiaki Takase and Millie Long were named to the women’s North-East all-star team. The South-West all-stars won 3-2 with Banner and Long providing a number of shots for the North-East team.

Long, already named the North Region MVP, was also named Monday as the NWAC Baden Soccer Athlete of the Year. She led the team with 19 goals and five assists.

In the championship games later that day, the Spokane women beat Clark 3-2. Spokane knocked Peninsula out of the postseason in the quarterfinals in a shootout after the two teams played to a 2-2 draw after regulation and two overtimes.

Spokane was the only team all season Peninsula did not beat. The Pirates tied with Spokane 3-3 in the season opener, then won 12 straight, including 11 games by shutout.

In the men’s championship game, Columbia Basin beat Walla Walla 1-0. Walla Walla knocked the Peninsula men out of the postseason, also in the quarterfinals. Like the women, the Peninsula men won the North Region, outlasting three other tough opponents to take the regional title.
