COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula women win fifth straight; men drop another game to Big Bend

LAKEWOOD — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team continued its hot start to the season with a win over Clackamas at the Raider Invitational at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom.

The Pirates, ranked fifth in the first NWAC Alaska Airlines Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll of the season, defeated the third-ranked Cougars 83-75 to earn a showdown in the tournament’s championship game against No. 2 Lane.

While the Peninsula women were rumbling to their fifth straight win Saturday, the men’s team stumbled to its second loss in two days to Big Bend, 86-58.

Sophomore Madison Pilster paced the Peninsula women with a career-high 28 points.

Freshman Imani Smith added 21 points and Miranda Schmillen scored 13 in the win.

Zhara Laster had nine points to go along with team-highs of 13 rebounds and four assists.

Whitney Nemelka didn’t score for Peninsula, but she did contribute five rebounds, three assists and a team-high three steals.

The Pirates (5-1) made 52 percent of their shots from the field, while holding Clackamas to 36 percent.

MOSES LAKE — The Runnin’ Vikes shut down the Pirates for the second consecutive day.

Freshman Ryley Callaghan, Peninsula’s leading scorer, was held to a season-low three points Saturday after putting up 25 in Friday’s game.

Deonte Dixon shouldered the scoring load for the Pirates with 21 points on 7 of 18 shooting.

Jeremiah Hobbs and Jonah Cook each added eight points in the loss.

Peninsula (3-5) next plays Walla Walla (3-4) in the three-day Grays Harbor Crossover tournament at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia on Friday at 5 p.m.
