PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys soccer team opened up its 2018 seson with a 2-0 shutout over Toledo-Winlock United at Peninsula College’s Sigmar Field.
Toledo-Winlock is a 1A school that lost in the state soccer tournament 1-0 to eventual champion Overlake.
The Roughriders controlled the ball the majority of the game, outshooting Toledo 24-4, with eight Riders’ shots on goal.
Ben Schneider nearly had a goal early with a golden chance one-on-one against Toledo keeper Allen Contreras, but Contreras made a big stop on his shot.
Schneider broke through a couple of minutes later. In the 13th minute, Schneider made a run down the right wing and crossed the ball to Stuart Methner, who kicked it to the near post for a goal for a 1-0 lead.
The Riders continued with the pressure in the second half, breaking through for a goal in the 48th minute when Methner picked up his second goal of the game on a long throw-in from Kenny Soule. Methner nearly had a hat trick as earlier in the first half, he hit the crossbar on a shot.
Lorenzo De La Torre picked up the shutout in goal with three saves.
“It was a good contest for both teams to start off the season with solid competition,” said coach Chris Saari.
“Port Angeles center backs Hollund Bailey and Andrew Borde both had solid performances to neutralize the Toledo attack. Andrew St. George was instrumental in the Rider midfield controlling possession and covering a lot of ground defensively,” Saari said.
Saari named Methner and Schneider as the offensive players of the game and named Borde and Bailey as the defensive players of the game. He named St. George as the transition player of the game.
Port Angeles (1-0) next plays at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Port Townsend.
