ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Britney Dean and Chloe Leverington, Forks softball

Forks shocked the Washington softball world by finishing fourth at the State 1A Tournament last weekend in Richland.

Forks, playing in arguably the toughest 1A softball league in the state, barely made the postseason after finishing 2-6 in league.

However, once they got to the postseason, the Spartans showed they were not to be taken lightly. They went 2-2 at the Southwest District 4 tournament to qualify for the 1A state tournament. Once they got to state, the Spartans won three games, made it to the state semifinals and eventually finished fourth in the tournament, beating teams with much better won-loss records.

Britney Dean and Chloe Leverington led the way for the Spartans.

In a 5-0 win over Lynden Christian, Dean pitched a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and only one walk. Leverington, meanwhile, hit a two-run home run.

Dean is graduating in a few days, but Leverington is a sophomore and will be back next year as part of a young Spartans team that could be very dangerous in the postseason again.
