ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Qwaapeys Greene, Neah Bay girls basketball

Even though the Neah Bay girls basketball team has graduated numerous seniors over the past three years, some of whom are now playing college basketball, the 14-1 team is ranked No. 1 among 1B schools and gunning for a third-straight state championship.

One of the reasons why the Red Devils have maintained their success has been the play of junior Qwaapeys Greene, who is now one of the team’s leaders after being a valuable contributor on the past two state championship teams. Greene, who goes by “Q,” had several huge games through January, beginning with a 35-point game on Jan. 4 against powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian.

Greene followed that game with a 20-point game in a win over 2A North Mason and a 27-point game against Crosspoint last Tuesday. Even though the Red Devils’ amazing 31-game win streak was finally snapped this weekend against 2B Rainier, ranked No. 2 in the state at a higher classification, Greene had a 14-point game.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
