ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Port Angeles’ Madelyn Wenzl

Port Angeles senior Madelyn Wenzl came up with crucial stops to preserve and prolong the Roughriders’ season last week.

Wenzl stood tall and allowed just one goal during a penalty kick shootout in the team’s district playoff opener against Franklin Pierce. The Roughriders claimed a 3-2 victory, the program’s first playoff win in years.

In overtime, Wenzl made a pair of crucial saves to preserve the tie and send the match to the penalty shootout.

She also did well in Olympic League contests last week.

Wenzl helped Port Angeles hold back North Mason’s second-half comeback attempt in a 3-2 victory last Tuesday with three spectacular diving saves in the second half.

In addition to her second-half heroics, Wenzl added another diving save on a penalty shot in the first half.
