Jason Hawes had a game for the ages Friday night for the Port Angeles Roughriders football team.
First of all, he had several tackles for losses and quarterback sacks, shooting the gaps from his linebacker position on defense.
Despite Hawes’ plays on defense, Kingston had the Riders on the ropes early in the game. But Hawes turned the game around on special teams.
First, he made a 40-yard run on a kick return, breaking several tackles to set up the Riders at midfield. That eventually led to a touchdown.
Then with only 8 seconds left in the half, Hawes alertly grabbed a bouncing football on a punt after a teammate tipped the ball. He outran the stunned Kingston defense down the sideline for a 70-yard return to give Port Angeles a lead at the half.
The Buccaneers never recovered from that play. Hawes added 53 yards rushing, including 37 yards on one drive, and 12 yards receiving on offense for a fantastic all-around game in a 28-7 Riders victory.
