ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Bailey Johnson, Forks basketball

Forks’ Bailey Johnson is getting red-hot at the perfect time of the year for the Spartans.

Johnson showed the kind of explosive scoring she is capable of when she scored 27 points against North Beach on Jan. 30 in Forks’ regular-season finale. The Spartans, Pacific 2B League champions, had a long layoff with a first-round bye in the District 4 2B tournament and didn’t play again until last week.

The Spartans lost to defending state champion Napavine in the first round of the tournament, putting them in a must-win situation for three straight games to make state.

On Saturday, Johnson had an even bigger game than she had against North Beach. It was the biggest scoring output of her career and the biggest game for any Spartan all year. She poured in 37 points in a must-win game in a 65-28 victory over Chief Leschi to keep Forks alive in the playoffs.

Johnson and her teammates next play Mossyrock tonight.
