PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles team from White Crane Martial Arts competed in the Washington State Taekwondo Master’s Union annual President’s Cup tournament Saturday in Federal Way, with every member of the team winning medals.

The event entails competition in several different events, including contact fighting, compulsory forms and breaking.

Instructor Andrew Hass, a teacher at the downtown facility, coached the team while also winning medals in black belt competition in three events. In the junior black belt division, Inka Burke won in forms. Andrew Chistison and Maisie Chistison won medals in the advanced divisions in colored belts. In the colored belt division, Xavier Kasten and Zae Kasten also won medals.

State swim allocations

SEQUIM — Sequim High School Girls swimming had a great showing at the West Central District 3 1A/2A meet this past weekend, taking sixth as a team out of 14 teams, and will send a total of two individuals and two relay teams to the state 2A championship beginning Friday in Federal Way.

Ava Shinkle had the best showing. She made state-qualifying times in both of her individual events. She swam the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.72, taking fourth overall and the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:22.99, taking sixth.

Annie Ellefson placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.14 and will move on to state.

The 200 medley relay team of Melia Nelson, Ellefson, Shinkle and Keira Morey placed sixth with a time of 2:10.27. The same girls teamed up in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:22.06 to finish sixth, gaining allocations to state.

There will be a large Port Angeles contingent at the meet as the Riders were third at district. Qualifying for state were all three Port Angeles relay teams (200 medley relay, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.)

Individually, Port Angeles’ Amayah Nelson qualified in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, Lynzee Reid in diving and Brooke St. Luise in the 100 backstroke. Joining them as wild cards are Lizzy Shaw in the 50 freestyle and Danika Asgeirsson in the 100 backstroke

East Jefferson’s Akeyla Behrenfeld qualified for state in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. The East Jefferson 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams also qualified for state as wildcards.
