Pirate women play for first place Saturday

BELLINGHAM — Fueled by a goal scored just 47 seconds into Wednesday’s NWAC North Region contest with Whatcom and further powered by sophomore Emilee Greve’s hat trick, the Peninsula College women’s soccer team came home with a 5-1 road win over the Orcas.

Freshman forward Samantha Oliveira notched the early goal and assisted on Greve’s first goal in the 14th minute and a 47th minute score by Kayla Alcott.

Greve added goals in the 18th (assisted by Halle Watson) and 48th minute as Peninsula rolled to a 5-0 lead.

The win means the Pirates (4-0-0, 6-2-0) will play for the division lead at home at noon Saturday against Edmonds (4-0-0, 5-0-1).

In the men’s contest, third-place Peninsula and second-place Whatcom managed a scoreless draw in a defensive contest that saw just 10 shots between the two teams.

The Pirate men (2-1-1, 3-3-1) are in a third-place tie with Edmonds (2-1-1, 2-3-2) and host the Tritons at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Cowan honored

SEQUIM — Sequim senior Riley Cowan has been recognized as an Athlete of the Week winner by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association for Sept. 9-15.

Cowan broke the school record for career touchdown passes (52) with a 26-yard touchdown strike to Kyler Rollness to help seal the Wolves’ 16-14 win over North Kitsap.

He also controlled the game with his foot, converting 3 of 3 field goals, booting three punts inside the 5-yard line and placing two kickoffs inside the 10-yard line as Sequim beat the Vikings for the first time since 2010.

Each winner receives a letter of recognition from the WIAA, a commemorative WIAA/Wendy’s Athlete of the Week promotional item and a certificate.
