AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Senior opens Spokane wood bat tourney with split

MEDICAL LAKE — Wilder Senior opened the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene WoodBat Classic with a back-to-back split Thursday morning, falling 14-3 to the NW 509 Stars and rallying for a 16-7 win in six innings over a familiar foe in Whatcom Post No. 7 at Holliday Field at Medical Lake High School.

Alex Angevine and Josiah Gooding were a potent 1-2 punch at the top of the Wilder Senior lineup in the game two victory over the boys from Bellingham.

Hitting leadoff, Angevine reached in all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two walks and a triple, scoring four runs and driving in a pair.

With the table set by Angevine and other teammates, Gooding also reached base four times, going 3-for-4 with a walk, a grand slam home run to give Wilder Senior a 15-4 lead in the ninth inning, scoring three runs and driving in a whopping seven runs.

Sequim’s Brayden White also tripled and singled, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice and Forks’ Landen Olsen was a spark down in the batting order, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits, a walk, getting hit by a pitch and scoring three runs.

Colten Romero went 5.2 innings on the mound, giving up seven runs on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Wilder Senior did all the damage it would do in the bottom of the first against the NW 509 Stars with Lincoln Bear connecting on a solo home run and Jordan Shumway and Rylan Politika each adding RBI singles.

Kody Williams took the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with a walk in three innings pitched.

Wilder Senior (19-6) will face the AHP Renegades today at 11:30 a.m. and the host Spokane Cannons at 4:30 p.m.
