AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Wilder sweeps its league openers behind strong pitching

PORT ANGELES — The Wilder seniors swept ESC Tigers Green and Gold from Auburn in their league openers this weekend.

Wilder won its first game over ESC Green 5-2 behind starting pitcher Ian Miller and its second game 13-1 over ESC Gold behind Brody Merritt.

“The kids worked hard all week and it showed with two big wins today. As has been the case all season, our pitchers were phenomenal. The boys combined for 12 innings, only allowing three earned runs, and in game two, only one hit,” said coach Karl Myers.

Pitching in relief on the day were Hayden Woods, Brady Shimko and Jadon Seibel.

“The boys were stellar on the base paths today moving up on a number of balls in the dirt and taking free bases on multiple occasions when the defense presented them. It was fun to see them play loose and confident and allow their instincts and athleticism to take over, this is an extremely intelligent and athletic group and it should be an awesome summer,” Myers said.

Ethan Flodstrom was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI against ESC Green, while Milo Whitman was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Myers said Joel Wood and Tyler Bowen also had good days at the plate and that Wilder batters did a good job squaring up the ball and moving runners over.

Wilder (2-0 in the Area 1 Northwest League) next goes on the road for four games beginning Thursday. On Thursday, Wilder plays Bellingham Post 7 in Bellingham, then on Friday, they play the Seattle Braves in Seattle, then ESC Green and ESC Gold on Saturday in Auburn.
