Eight Jefferson County seats remain without candidates

PORT TOWNSEND — No candidates filed for any of the eight positions open on the first day of the special filing period for Jefferson County.

If no candidates file for a position during the three-day filing period that opened Wednesday, the position will be deemed lapsed and will not appear on the general election ballot. The incumbent or person appointed will be up for election at the next election when such positions are voted upon.

If any candidates file, the races will appear only on the general election ballot, with no primary election contest regardless of the number who seek the post. The candidate who receives the most votes in the general election will be declared the winner.

The filing period started Wednesday and will remain open until 4:30 p.m. Friday. Candidates can register online, in-person, by email or physical mail.

The open seats include director at-large Positions 2 and 5 on the Queets/Clearwater School Board; Position 2 commissioner for the Brinnon Fire District; Positions 1, 2 and 3 of the Clearwater Fire District commission; Position 3 of the Brinnon Water District No. 2; and Position 3 of the Brinnon Cemetery District No. 1.

Filing is available online 24 hours a day during the filing period at https://voter.votewa.gov/candidatefiling/ candidatelogin.aspx.

Candidates must be registered to vote in their districts, provide a valid email address and pay filing fees.

When filing by mail, candidates must send the candidate declaration and filing fee to Jefferson County Elections, P.O. Box 563, Port Townsend, WA 98368 or as attachments in an email to elections@co.jefferson.wa.us.

Declaration of Candidacy forms and filing fee information can be found at https://www.co.jefferson.wa.us/1268/For-Candidates.

All candidate declarations must be in the Auditor’s Office by 4:30 p.m. Friday. Candidates who file during this period are not permitted to withdraw from the election.
