Clallam candidate forums begin Wednesday

PORT ANGELES — The League of Women Voters of Clallam County has announced four candidate forums this month, with the first set for this Wednesday.

The forums are offered to help voters prepare to cast their ballots for the Nov. 6 general election. Ballots will be mailed to registered voters Oct. 17.

The forums are free and open to the public. Audience members are encouraged to bring their questions for the candidates.

Here is the schedule:

• Wednesday — 6 p.m., Port Angeles City Hall, City Council Chambers, 321 E. Fifth St.

Candidates featured will be:

— Clallam County Director of Community Development — Incumbent Mary Ellen Winborn and challenger Julie Gardiner; non-partisan office.

— Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney — Incumbent Mark Nichols, Republican, and challenger Selinda Barkhuis, who filed with no party preference; partisan office.

— Clallam County Sheriff — Incumbent Bill Benedict and challenger Jim McLaughlin, non-partisan office.

• Oct. 16 — 6 p.m., Forks campus of Peninsula College, 481 S. Forks Ave.

Candidates featured will be:

— Clallam County District Court 2 Judge — Erik Rohrer and John Black; non-partisan office.

— Clallam County Commissioner District 3 — Incumbent Bill Peach, Republican, and Howard “Mike” Doherty Jr., Democrat; partisan office.

The forum is co-sponsored by the Peninsula College Associated Student Council.

• Oct. 17 — 4 p.m., Peninsula College Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Candidates featured will be:

— Public Utility District Commissioner District No. 3 — Incumbent Ted Simpson and challenger Jim Waddell; non-partisan office.

— Congressional District 6 — U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Gig Harbor, and challenger Dr. Douglas Dightman, a Shelton Republican; partisan office.

• Oct. 18 — 6 p.m., Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

Candidates featured will be:

— Clallam County District Court 1 Judge — Dave Neupert and Suzanne Hayden; non-partisan office.

— State Representative Position 1 — Incumbent Mike Chapman, D-Port Angeles, and challenger Jodi Wilke, a Port Townsend Republican; partisan office.

— State Representative Position 2 — Incumbent Steve Tharinger, D-Port Townsend, and challenger Jim McEntire, a Sequim Republican; partisan office.

The forum is co-sponsored by the North Olympic Library System.

Ballots will have prepaid postage, so voters will not need to apply a stamp. Ballots can also be deposited in a ballot drop-box up to 8 p.m. Nov. 6.
