Yurt destroyed by fire south of Chimacum

CHIMACUM — Investigation continued last week on the cause of a fire that destroyed a yurt in the 400 block of Egg &I Ridge Road.

Thursday’s 3:17 p.m. fire displaced the two residents. No one was hurt, said Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman.

According to the residents, a heat lamp had been left on to keep some ducks warm on the front porch when they left the structure, Beezley said, adding Friday that the fire investigation was not complete.

An East Jefferson Fire-Rescue firefighter was backing an engine into the Chimacum Fire Station when he noticed a dark plume of smoke south of Chimacum and called it in to 9-1-1 emergency dispatchers at 3:17 p.m., Beezley said.

Shortly after, neighbors of the yurt called 9-1-1 to report a fire.

Firefighters arrived to find the yurt engulfed in flames and began a defensive attack to protect surrounding vegetation and a nearby home, Beezley said.

The fire was knocked down in approximately 15 minutes.

The residents, who didn’t have renter’s insurance, were offered the services of the American Red Cross but declined, citing offers for housing by friends in the area.

Firefighters from Port Ludlow Fire &Rescue and Quilcene Fire Rescue assisted on the call.
