PORT ANGELES – Monday’s arrival of three World War II bombers at William R. Fairchild International Airport was special to two very different people for two very different reasons.
One wants to fly the modern versions of these military aircraft someday.
The other wanted to reconnect with a father he never knew who died in one of the aircraft.
After skipping the North Olympic Peninsula last year following a three-year run, the Collings Foundation’s “Wings of Freedom” tour returned Monday for a three-day stay.
This year’s traveling display includes a North American B-25J Mitchell medium bomber as well as the only fully restored and flying Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber and one of only nine airworthy B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers.
The plans will remain for public tours until noon Wednesday before departing for another three-day stay in Everett.
