Wooden Boat Festival under way

PORT TOWNSEND — More than 25,000 people are expected to visit east Jefferson County during the 28th annual Wooden Boat Festival that begins a three-day run today.

The majority of events are at the Point Hudson Marina at the north end of the downtown district. Boats taking part in the festival can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is live music nightly.

Visitors will have the chance to view wooden boats of all sizes and shapes; hear tales of the sea in word and song; and celebrate the tradition and workmanship of wooden boats.

One-day adult tickets cost $12 with seniors (65 and older) and students paying $6 per ticket.

A three-day adult pass is $24 and $12 for students and seniors.

Children 12 & under are admitted for free.

New on the schedule this year are talks and demonstrations by more than 50 experts in the field of wooden boat building, care and maintenance.

A complete schedule of the educational events can be found at http://woodenboat.org/whatsnew.htm.

Visitors to the festival will have the chance to see two ships with historical backgrounds.

S/V Lady Washington and M/V Virginia V are moored on the waterfront. Both will be open for visitor tours and public sails over the weekend.
