PORT ANGELES — Womanfest, a North Olympic Peninsula nonprofit organization, will host the 11th annual International Women’s Day celebration at Olympic Cellars winery, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, with a supper for all comers this Wednesday.

The winery, a longtime co-sponsor of the event, will have homemade soups and breads plus cookies for dessert, as well as a cash wine bar.

And as always, good cheer and conversation are always on the menu, said Olympic Cellars’ Molly Rivard, also a Womanfest board member.

The suggested donation for dinner is $10, which will go to one local and one international charity.

In addition, winery owner Lisa Martin will donate a portion of the evening’s wine sales proceeds to the two organizations.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiary on the local front is the Lower Elwha Family Advocacy Program, which provides help for Native American and Alaskan Native community members who are victims of domestic violence, dating violence or stalking, and works to raise awareness about teen pregnancy, sexual assault and domestic violence.

Beatriz Arakawa of the Lower Elwha Klallam will speak about the program and what it has meant for local women and girls.

Money raised Wednesday night also will support Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer, or PINCC.

Port Angeles nurse practitioner Lyell Fox will give a talk on the organization’s volunteer medical teams, which train doctors and nurses in developing countries to recognize and treat this form of cancer.

Fox also will share her own experiences as a volunteer.

Retreat in September

Besides celebrating International Women’s Day, Womanfest holds a retreat every September at Lake Crescent’s Camp David Junior, supports local projects and awards scholarships.

This year, the scholarship committee is particularly interested in receiving applications from mature women who need some financial help for education to realize a midlife or transitional goal.
