LAPUSH — Tourism and tribal culture will remain the focus of the Quileute Tribal Council following the recent reorganization on the five-person board.
During the tribe’s annual meeting, Leo Williams was elected to a three-year term on the tribal council.
Williams, who previously served on the council, replaces Tony Foster.
Tribal Chairman Russell Woodruff Sr. said Wednesday that the annual meeting and election held Jan. 17 indicate tribal members are still committed to economic progress the Quileute have made in recent years.
“I think they supported what’s been carrying on for the changes of the community as far as concentrating on tourism,” Woodruff said, citing construction of new cabins at the waterfront Ocean Park Resort, opening of River’s Edge Restaurant last summer and the recent construction of a sidewalk connecting the upper and lower areas of LaPush.
“They really appreciate that those have taken place, and they’re just saying, ‘Don’t stop. Carry on and do more,”‘ Woodruff said.
“We’re not a gaming tribe, so we have to really concentrate on tourism,” he said.
In addition to Woodruff as chairman, tribal council leadership positions are Vice Chairwoman Pearl Conlow, Treasurer Bert Black and Secretary DeAnna Hobson.
