West End: New superintendent slated for Clallam Bay Corrections Center

CLALLAM BAY — The state Department of Corrections is changing superintendents at Clallam Bay Corrections Center and Olympic Corrections Center.

Clallam Bay Superintendent Sandra Carter will take the helm of McNeil Island Corrections Center near Tacoma, with Olympic Corrections Superintendent Karen Brunson taking over at Clallam Bay.

The new assignments will take effect on Aug. 1, Carter said.

At the same time, there are three other superintendents who will be taking over other facilities.

Deputy Prison Administrator for Corrections Mike Kenney said the moves are an effort by Director Harold W. Clarke to give the state’s top prison officials the chance to round out their knowledge of Washington’s prison system.

Kenney likened it to the general education students get at liberal arts colleges.

“People come out of that richer,” he said.

Carter has been in charge of Clallam Bay for about 4½ years.
