West End: Makah donate 20,000 pounds of fish to food bank, Salvation Army

PORT ANGELES — The Makah tribe has donated 20,000 pounds of yellowtail rock fish to the city’s food bank and to the local Salvation Army.

The food bank, open from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 402 S. Valley St., received the rock fish in 20-pound boxes and gave them to 69 families Monday.

During the next two weeks the food bank will distribute the rock fish to about 500 local families, said Mikki Saunders, the food bank’s director.

Frank Cooper, a cook who has worked for the Port Angeles Salvation Army for 10 years, said he will bake the fish Friday and serve it with potato salad, baked beans and corn bread.

The Salvation Army usually serves fish on Fridays at 206 S. Peabody St. and “tries to serve up a good meal,” Cooper said.
