West End: Flag thief steals Stars and Stripes in Forks

FORKS — Bolting a flagpole in place did not stop a thief from stealing the “Stars and Stripes” from the Forks Visitors Center on Wednesday.

“This particular thief has been diligent,” said Diane Schostak, Forks Chamber of Commerce executive director.

The theft marked the fifth time in 18 months that a U.S. flag has been stolen from the office on South Forks Avenue, Schostak said.

The chamber has tried to foil the thief by making the flag more difficult to reach.

“We’ve taken precautions,” she said. “We’ve been creative.”

But when the thief couldn’t lower the flag Wednesday, the thief choose to take out the entire pole, she said.

By cutting a bolt, the flagpole was laid down and the flag was taken, Schostak said.

No other damage has been reported during any of the thefts.
