FORKS — Two children toured the Hoh Rainforest last week after winning an essay contest sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Environmental Education.
Thomas Pyle, 12, of Cleveland, and Joe Bohenek, 11, of Rockland, Mass. were selected from 6,000 entrants throughout the United States in the essay contest “My Pollution Solution.”
The theme for the contest involved alternative fuels.
Pyle and Bohenek and their families won round-trip airfare, a weekend stay in Forks and a visit to the Hoh Rainforest, depicted on a series of stamps issued last year, Forks Postmaster Nick Julich said.
They were presented framed Pacific Coast Rainforest stamp sheets by Julich and Diane Schostak, Chamber of Commerce executive director.
“The boys and their families were absolutely delighted to stay here,” Schostak said. “They really enjoyed the area and the laid back lifestyle of the people here.”
Pyle and Bohenek were also presented with gift baskets crafted of driftwood from the chamber.
Julich hosted a luncheon to honor the children.
