Welch to retire from Port Townsend City Council

PORT TOWNSEND — Mark Welch, who has spent 10 years on the Port Townsend City Council, has decided to not seek another four year term.

After much thought and discussion with my family and friends, I have decided not to seek another term in office,” Welch wrote in an email to the Peninsula Daily News.

“While it has been my pleasure and honor to serve, I feel that it’s time for me to move on and find other ways of contributing to my community.”

Welch is the last of three City Council incumbents to announce his intentions. Michelle Sandoval and Catharine Robinson filed for re-election Monday.

Sandoval, Welch and Robinson are all former mayors, a position chosen by fellow council members.

“We are fortunate in our city to be rich in human resources, and there are many thoughtful, dedicated people who can and will step forward to offer their service to our city government,” Welch said.

“Local government remains the last government we can touch. It’s vital that we each be involved in our own way.”

Pamela Adams, who ran for City Council in 2011 but was disqualified because she did not meet residency requirements, said this morning that she plans to run for Welch’s seat.

Adams, who said previously that she would not challenge an incumbent council member, said Welch gave her advance notice of his intentions.

Candidate filing continues until 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Jefferson County Auditor’s Office, 1820 Jefferson St.
