The YMCA drama camp is going medieval for its sixth summer production.
Directed by YMCA drama director and Port Angeles High School drama coach Kelly Lovall, the camp will produce the “Nights of the Rad Table” for a quartet of shows this weekend.
This story takes all the romantic notions of honor, bravery and chivalry found in the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and turns it all upside-down.
Artie, a local skateboarder unsuccessfully tries to impress Gwen, a bookworm who idolizes King Arthur and Sir Lancelot and dreams about living in “a time when they rode out on quests to discover good and to banish evil from this world.”
When Merlin shows up from a long sleep behind a park tree and transports them back in time, they both find a world pretty much like the one they just left, filled with vanity and visions of glory — a place where Lancelot holds rock star-like status; Morgan LaFey is a talented magician who takes pleasure in changing her suitors into frogs; Merlin fumbles with outdated spells; and the Knights bumble around trying to decode a riddled quest.
The 50-minute show opens at 2 p.m. today and Saturday, with evening performances at 7 p.m. today and 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is free.
The play is the culmination of the three-week drama camp, which includes improvisational drama games, acting exercises, stage presentation and play rehearsal.
