PORT TOWNSEND — The Chairs, the resident improvisational troupe at the Chameleon Theater, will finish a 24-hour “Improv-athon” — and close out its season — this Saturday night with a performance created around the theme of “pick your poison.”
Show time is 7 p.m. at the Chameleon, 800 W. Park Ave., and admission is by donation. No reservations are needed.
In the first half, The Chairs will offer improvised scenes exploring the question: What does “pick your poison” mean, anyhow? Theatergoers will be invited to join in and suggest things, of course.
The second half of The Chairs’ show will be given over to a longer improv sequence created from a single suggestion.
“The audience can expect to see monologues, scenes and group improvisation culminating in a final scene,” said Joey Pipia, artistic director at the Chameleon Theater.
As for the Improv-athon, which will start with performances tonight at 8 and run all the way through to Saturday’s 7 p.m. show with The Chairs, audiences are welcome to watch, laugh and join in.
Improv performers, beginning to advanced, are likewise welcome to get involved in the Improv-athon anytime from tonight on to Saturday night. It will all come to an end by 8 p.m. Saturday, Pipia said. More information can be found at 360-379-1068 or joey@olympus.net.
“Many local actors grace the stage at the Improv-athon,” Pipia added. “Improvisation goes on all through the night, and indeed, many people stay over. There is some food, but if you’re planning on an overnight, you should bring something to eat and a sleeping bag.”
And you never know what wonders will unfold.
“My favorite memory,” Pipia said, “is watching a fully improvised musical that happened at 3 a.m. at the Improv-athon three years ago.
“It was a transcendent moment.”
