WEEKEND: Port Townsend Gallery Walk offers Northwest artistic vistas Saturday

Today and tonight signify Friday, July 31.

PORT TOWNSEND — Artists from Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon are showing work in downtown Port Townsend this summer as the 17th annual “Expressions Northwest” show opens at the Northwind Arts Center, which is just one of the stops on the August Gallery Walk.

The art-thirsty can see the “Expressions” exhibition starting at 11:30 a.m. today as the Northwind center, 701 Water St., opens.

Admission is free to see the 66 pieces selected from 330 submissions.

Saturday is the day of the first event associated with the show: juror Kathleen Moles will give a lecture on it at 1 p.m. at Northwind.

There’s no charge for this or any of the activities that are part of the monthlong Art Port Townsend festival; more details await at www.artporttownsend.org.

The Gallery Walk, as it does every month, brings more art to see and artists to converse with from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Venues include Gallery Nine, 1012 Water St., where Kathy Constantine and Beth Garrison’s mythical birds, whales and seashells await visitors.

Drawings, collages, photographs and pottery fill the place, and the artists will be on hand to chat Saturday evening.

A few blocks away at the Port Townsend Gallery, 715 Water St., garden art is in the spotlight this month.

Sylvia White’s big, green bug made of rubber tubes; Dennis McDaniel’s tree-bark impressions; Walter Massey’s copper bird baths and Caroline Littlefield’s one-of-a-kind wind chimes are among the attractions.

Pippa’s Real Tea, 636 Water St., is also part of the circuit with a newly mounted show titled “Liquid Planet.”

It’s a celebration of water, with images by members of the Surface Design Association’s North Peninsula Chapter.

The artists’ reception will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The nearly $1 million, 40-foot-wide scoreboard, which dwarfs the field’s old board, is expected to be operational in time for opening day of the Port Angeles Lefties baseball season on May 30. About $800,000 came from state funding through the West Coast League, and $120,000 in Port Angeles Lodging Tax funds also were awarded. Due to technical issues, final placement of the structure was postponed on Wednesday. (Keith Thorpe/Peninsula Daily News)
