Weekend Port Townsend car fire started in area of battery, officials say

PORT TOWNSEND — A fire that heavily damaged a car parked in a driveway on Walnut Street started in the area of the battery, firefighters said.

No one was hurt in the early Sunday morning fire, said Bill Beezley, East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman.

The car had been purchased recently from a private buyer, the unidentified owner told firefighters.

He had heard a “pop” at 6:20 a.m. Sunday, looked out the window of his house and saw the front of his 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII in flames.

Passers-by called 9-1-1 while the owner unsuccessfully attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze, Beezley said, but not before the car had suffered heavy damage.

The owner said he had purchased the car “two or three weeks ago” from a private seller and that it hadn’t been driven for several days.

The owner was evaluated and released by medics after inhaling some smoke while trying to put out the fire, Beezley said.
