WEEKEND: Olympic Medical Center Foundation fundraiser in Port Angeles to go ‘hog wild’ Saturday for therapy pool

PORT ANGELES — “Hog Wild — A Night of Games, Suds and Grub” will offer a pig roast, microbrews and games from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets to the fundraiser at Barhop Brewing, 124 W. Railroad Ave., are $25.

All proceeds from the inaugural benefit, the latest sponsored by the Olympic Medical Center Foundation, will go toward capital improvements of a water therapy pool at Olympic Medical Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Port Angeles, said Bruce Skinner, foundation executive director.

Games, too

Along with roasted pork and Barhop microbrews, the benefit will feature several games in which attendees can win prizes.

The fundraiser is presented by Sequim Health and Rehabilitation and Crestwood Health and Rehabilitation, which also will make a major donation to the project, Skinner said.

Those who don’t attend the benefit can donate by mailing checks earmarked “Support the Therapy Pool” to the Olympic Medical Center Foundation at 928 E. Caroline St., Port Angeles, WA 98362, or phone the foundation at 360-417-7144.

“The foundation will give 100 percent of monies that are donated for this project,” Skinner said.

After hearing protests, OMC commissioners announced earlier this month that the therapy pool, which was slated for closure Sept. 1, would remain open.

An anonymous donor has committed to donating $25,000 — half of the $50,000 needed to purchase a new pool liner and other needed renovations — if the donation is matched.

Since then, the foundation has received another $10,000, Skinner has said.

OMC officials had said they had to shut down the pool because of high operating costs and the need to replace the liner.

The hospital froze capital spending after losing about $1.4 million in 2014.

Pool users and others packed commissioners’ meetings to support keeping the facility open.

OMC officials hope to keep the pool open through 2015 by restructuring pool management and increasing the number of users.

Hog Wild is the foundation’s first new event since the Sonny Sixkiller Golf Classic in July was added four years ago.

The foundation also organizes a heart-health-oriented luncheon, Red, Set, Go!, in February; the Duck Derby in June; and the Festival of Trees in December, among other events, to raise money for OMC.

For tickets to Hog Wild, phone the foundation office at 360-417-7144
