WEEKEND: More than just lavender on tap in Sequim

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Today” refers to Friday, July 19; Saturday is July 20; Sunday is July 21.

SEQUIM — Several organizations are conducting activities in conjunction with Sequim Lavender Weekend today through Sunday.

Among them are the following events:

Driftwood art show

SEQUIM — The fifth Olympic Driftwood Sculptors Art Show will be held today through Sunday.

The free show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

More than 150 sculptures by numerous artists will be exhibited along with “Aquarium,” a separate display of marine-related sculptures.

Demonstrations of works-in-progress will be ongoing throughout the show, and driftwood artists will be available to answer questions and explain the process used in creating these art pieces.

Hand-crafted driftwood pendants and other accessories will be available for purchase from an on-site Driftwood Boutique.

Raffle tickets will be on sale for a chance to win a driftwood sculpture created by several club members.

For more information, phone 360-681-2535, visit www.olympicdriftwoodsculptors.org or email info@olympicdriftwoodsculptors.org.

Quilting show

SEQUIM — The Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club’s 27th annual quilting show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Sunday in the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

A $5 donation is requested for admission.

Protection Island

SEQUIM — The Protection Island Puffin Marine Sunset Dinner Cruises conducted in conjunciton with Sequim Lavender Weekend are sold out — but the Dungeness River Audubon Center, which is benefitting from the cruises, says there is an alternative offered by a private business for those who want to sail by the island.

Expeditions Northwest has a few seats left on a cruise that leaves from The Landing terminal at 6 p.m. tonight, the terminal manager said.

The cruise, “Picture Perfect Protection Island,” costs $80 per person and will be on the business’ 120-foot express passenger ferry.

It includes a picnic-style dinner. It will return along Dungeness Spit.

The cruise isn’t in conjunction with the lavender weekend, but instead was created for a photographer workshop from Arizona, the terminal manager said.

To reserve a seat, phone 360-652-6210

The 2½-hour dinner cruises to benefit the education programs of the Dungeness River Audubon Center and Railroad Bridge Park at 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, will leave John Wayne Marina at 6:30 p.m. today and Saturday.

They have been sold out for two weeks.

Also sold out are the Lavender Weekend Day Camps that the center is hosting this weekend.

Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge Protection Island Refuge is located near the mouth of Discovery Bay in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Lavender party

SEQUIM — Annie’s Flower Farm, on the grounds of The Cutting Garden at 303 Dahlia Llama Road, will throw a Lavender Party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

All are welcome to stop by, enjoy free cookies and lavender lemonade, and listen to music performed by local musicians Cort Armstrong, Jim Faddis, Donna Rankin, Ron Munro and Getta Rogers.

Annie’s Flower Farm also has “U-pick” lavender and more than 100 local flower varieties available for purchase.

Thunderbird author

SEQUIM — Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm, 274154 U.S. Highway 101, welcomes Howard Hansen, author of the memoir Twilight on the Thunderbird.

Hansen, a Quileute tribal elder, will talk to farm visitors from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today through Sunday.

The book, which focuses on the history of the Quileute tribe, also features Hansen’s own illustrations. Autographed copies also will be available.
