WEEKEND: ‘Handful’ of short comedies on stage in Sequim starting tonight

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, Oct. 2.

SEQUIM — Five short Readers Theatre Plus plays — including two written by local residents — will take the stage tonight for a two-weekend run of a new show the actors and directors are calling “A Handful of Humor.”

The Guy Cole Center is the venue for this production, which promises a variety of quick comedies, all to raise funds for the Sister City Association linking Sequim and Shiso City, Japan.

The association, along with running a student exchange between the two communities every year, also has the Friendship Garden at the entrance to Carrie Blake Park.

Tickets to “A Handful of Humor” are $10 in advance at the Purple Haze Lavender shop and Sequim Spice and Tea, both on West Washington Street in downtown Sequim, and at Odyssey Books, 114 W. Front St., Port Angeles.

Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door of the Guy Cole Center, inside Carrie Blake Park at 202 N. Blake Ave.

Curtain times for this showcase of local theater artists are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays tonight through Oct. 11.

Here’s the lineup of shorts, directed by Ric Munhall and John Cory:

■ “Afternoon in the Park,” written by Sequim’s Barbara Drennan and starring Drennan and Michael Aldrich.

■ “The Something Special Coffeehouse,” written by Janis Butler Holm and starring Hazel Blake, Margo Donze-Sanders, Valerie Lape and Karla Messerschmidt-Morgan.

■ “The Cinderella Story,” an unauthorized version told by the ugly stepsisters, adapted by John Cory from a play by Kenneth Lillington, starring Bobbie Lowe-Kreider in the title role. Ken Winters, Kath Beecher, Anne Sargent, Karla Messerschmidt-Morgan, Barbara Hughes, Valerie Lape and Hazel Blake also appear.
