WEEKEND: Contra dance to greet new year Saturday at Black Diamond Hall

PORT ANGELES — The first community contra dance of the year will take the floor this Saturday night as the Power House Band and caller Lindsey Dono arrive at the Black Diamond Community Hall, 1942 Black Diamond Road.

As always, everyone is welcome regardless of contra-dancing experience, since a beginners’ workshop and refresher starts at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is a suggested $8 donation for adults or $4 for youngsters under age 18.

No one is turned away, and “most important is to bring your enthusiasm and eagerness to dance,” according to the website, www.BlackDiamondDance.org.

Starting at 8 p.m. “the Power House Band will blow you away,” the site continues.

“These kids do it with style. Led by the powerful 14-year old fiddler Kate Powers and backed up by her siblings and friends, this is an up-and-coming local band,” the site says.

“Kate already plays in the first violin section in the Port Angeles symphony, and can fiddle up a storm.

“She plays a variety of dance music from old-time to ragtime,” while her band has “a huge appetite for new tunes and variations to keep the evening interesting.”

Dono, meantime, is a dance caller known for her calm teaching, which can coax even the most skittish beginner onto the dance floor.

For more information about these first-Saturday-of-the-month community contra dances at the Black Diamond hall, which is about 2 miles south of town via Pine Street, check www.BlackDiamondDance.org or phone 360-457-5667.
