A workshop about preserving berries in Sequim and guided beach walks in Port Townsend are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

QUILCENE

Worthington tour

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Historical Museum will host a tour around the exterior of the Worthington Mansion at 1 p.m. Sunday.

In 2013, the Quilcene Historical Museum purchased the Worthington Mansion, a barn, several outbuildings and 10 acres at 151 E. Columbia Ave.

The project’s purpose was to save a rapidly deteriorating but culturally and historically important private residence and restore it as a community asset.

Music on patio

BRINNON — Pleasant Harbor Marina Resort will host a musical performance by Norman Baker from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The marina is located at 308913 U.S. Highway 101.

Since picking up the guitar and bass at the age of 12, Baker has been composing music and playing various instruments in many bands throughout the U.S., Chile and Nigeria.

Facility tour

PORT HADLOCK — The Northwest School of Wood Boatbuilding will hold free open tours from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today.

The school welcomes individuals to visit and see the campus and shops of the Port Hadlock Heritage Campus. No reservation is necessary for the tours at 42 N. Water St.

Plant sale slated

CHIMACUM — The Kul Kah Han Native Plant Garden will hold its semiannual plant sale at the Chimacum Corner Farmstand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

It will offer plant starts from a number of the garden’s 260 native species at the farmstand, 9122 Rhody Drive.

In addition, area nurseries will offer a variety of native Northwest plants.

The sale will benefit the garden’s maintenance and educational programs.

Pool discount

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer a discounted open swim from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Everyone swims for $2 at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

The whole pool is dedicated to play. Noodles, rings and other floating toys will be available. No lap lanes will be offered.

Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Cat club benefit

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County’s Paws-N-Claws 4-H Club travel group will offer catnip mice during its rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The sale will be in the Cat Building at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.

Catnip mice also will be available for purchase at the Port Townsend Farmers Market, 650 Tyler St., on June 18.

The club’s catnip mice usually are available only in November and December but will be available for purchase early for the fundraiser.

Funds will go toward the club’s trip to the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary in St. Pauls, N.C., where the travel group will volunteer.

Beach walks

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee will sponsor free guided beach walks at Fort Townsend State Park from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday.

The guided walks at 1370 Old Fort Townsend Road will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by a presentation each day at 11 a.m. about a shoreline restoration project expected to begin in mid-July.

No Discover Pass is needed Saturday — a State Parks free day — but passes will be required to park Sunday.

Displays, hands-on activities hosted by Washington State University Beach Naturalists and Marine Resources Committee volunteers, and information about the restoration project will be available each day.

The June educational event is co-sponsored by Friends of Fort Townsend, Washington State Parks and the Northwest Straits Foundation, with support from the Environmental Protection Agency through the Puget Sound Marine and Nearshore Grants program.

Free museum day

PORT TOWNSEND — Three museums in Jefferson County will offer free admission to residents of Jefferson County on Saturday.

The free day is for the Jefferson Museum of Art & History, 540 Water St.; the Commanding Officer’s Quarters at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way; and the Rothschild House Museum, 418 Taylor St.

Free Day at the Museums is the first Saturday of every month and is supported by the Port Townsend Arts Commission.

Berry workshop

SEQUIM — A workshop on growing and preserving berries is set from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The workshop, hosted by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, will be at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road.

The cost of the workshop is $15. Class size is limited.

Participants will be provided with publications on growing berries and resources for safe processing of the harvest.

Master Gardener veteran Jeanette Stehr-Green will share her experience on growing strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries in her home garden.

Betsy Wharton, also a Master Gardener and proprietor of the Clallam Canning Co., will tell how to safely preserve berries through freezing, drying, fermenting and water bath canning.

She also is a recipe columnist for the Peninsula Daily News.

Flag celebration

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Chapter No. 539 of the National Sojourners and Heroes of the ’76 and Camp Followers will hold a public celebration of the American flag at the Sequim Masonic Lodge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sojourners will be dressed in full Revolutionary War military regalia and present “Salute to the Flag” and the full ceremonies of lowering, retiring and raising the flag at the Lodge, 700 S. Fifth Ave.

In addition, the Camp Followers with the Heroes of ’76 will present the history of the flag.

The event is free and open to the public.

Refreshments will be available.

Attendees are welcome to bring old flags and will be shown how to properly retire them.

Rummage sale set

SEQUIM — Trinity United Methodist Church will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Items that will be available include jewelry, tools, furniture, appliances, clothing, books, plants and toys at the church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Proceeds support the church’s community projects.

PORT ANGELES — Students from Janet Lucas’ creative writing class will read original work at Peninsula College in the Little Theater at 12:35 p.m. today.

The students’ work will represent a wide variety of literary genres and styles. Most is fiction, with topics ranging from science fiction, gangsters and undiscovered tribes to unrequited love.

One student will play music to the song lyrics he wrote.

PORT ANGELES — The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble of Russia will perform an evening of musical entertainment at 7 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

This is the fourth consecutive year for the annual concert.

History Tales

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Historical Society’s History Tales presentation will take place at First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St., at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Local author Alice Alexander, who also writes the Clallam County history column for the Peninsula Daily News, will present on the Lyre River and Gettysburg area.

Alexander also will sign copies of her historical book West of the Elwha, which will be available for purchase.

The historical society also will have its annual meeting, induct new board members and officers, and announce the winners of the Heritage Award.
