PORT ANGELES — Backcountry skier and ski patroller Gary Holmquist will present an avalanche awareness workshop at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The workshop, sponsored by the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club and Olympic National Park, will be presented at the Red Lion Hotel at 221 N. Lincoln St.
A donation of $5 is suggested. Donations will go to the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club, which operates the Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard Area under a concession contract with the National Park Service.
“We are happy to support the Winter Sports Club in offering this important workshop,” said park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum.
“Avalanche awareness is vital for anyone who explores beyond the meadows and ski area at Hurricane Ridge.”
Holmquist will explain the anatomy of an avalanche and offer tips for avoiding them.
He has been a ski patroller at Hurricane Ridge since 2008 and has completed a progression of avalanche courses, including the National Avalanche School program.
He is currently a National Ski Patrol Avalanche and Mountain Travel & Rescue instructor, teaching courses in these disciplines to various ski patrols in the Cascades.
