COYLE — It’s unusual for Norm Johnson to book two bands for one of his Concerts in the Woods, but in the case of Wren and Friends and the Sky Colony, it fit.
“These are both young bands starting out and needing exposure,” said Johnson, who brings independent musicians from across the country into the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, an intimate room in rural Jefferson County.
Admission is by donation to the 7:30 p.m. concert Saturday, and listeners of all ages are welcome at the center, 923 Hazel Point Road.
Wren and Friends is an all-original, alternative folk ensemble mixing vocal harmonies, finger-picking guitar and sweeping fiddle lines.

The Sky Colony, according to songwriter Kyle Findley-Meier, is a collective of country kids from Whatcom County, players who, like Wren and Friends, blend intricate guitar and harmony singing.
Their sets are made up of original folk songs that will, later this year, be released on the Sky Colony’s first full-length record.

“One is an all-girl band and the other an all-boy band,” Johnson quipped.
And after sharing a gig in Seattle and finding a common love of music and nature, well, “they think of each other as brother-and-sister bands.”
