UPDATE: Winds in Port Townsend-Diamond Point areas today

Winds are gusting in the 30 mph and 40 mph range in the Port Townsend-Diamond Point areas today.

A peak gust of 52 mph was logged at 9:18 a.m. in Port Townsend, and winds in the mid- and high 40 mph range are blowing across Point Wilson.

No strong winds are forecast elsewhere on North Olympic Peninsula lowlands, and the highest gust reported at Sequim Airport was 13 mph. The air is still in Port Angeles.

The winds appear to be concentrated in the San Juan Islands-Bellingham-Admiralty Inlet areas:

* WINDS…LOCAL WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 50 MPH.

* TIMING…THE PERIOD OF STRONGEST WINDS WILL BE LATE THIS

MORNING THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING.

* IMPACTS…LOCALLY SUSTAINED WINDS EXCEEDING 30 MPH AND GUSTS

EXCEEDING 45 MPH COULD CAUSE MINOR DAMAGE OR EVEN POWER

OUTAGES.

A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 39 MPH OR

GUSTS OF 45 TO 57 MPH ARE LIKELY. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN SNAP

SMALL TREE BRANCHES…TOPPLE SMALL OR SHALLOW-ROOTED TREES…AND

CAUSE LOCAL POWER OUTAGES.

A crane lifts the framework for a new scoreboard being installed at Port Angeles Civic Field. The nearly $1 million, 40-foot-wide scoreboard, which dwarfs the field’s old board, is expected to be operational in time for opening day of the Port Angeles Lefties baseball season on May 30.
