PORT ANGELES — A Coast Guard cutter backed by a helicopter crew from Port Angeles prevented a fishing vessel from sinking Wednesday night in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, where it was taking on water.
The Coast Guard says a rescue team from the cutter Adelie controlled the flooding on the 57-foot vessel, Zealot, and the cutter towed it to Port Townsend for repairs.
The incident happened about two miles south of Smith Island, a small isle in the Strait’s eastern end due north of Port Townsend.
The Zealot, based in Ketchikan, Alaska, had three people on board. There were no injuries.
Weather conditions on scene are four-foot seas and 20-knot winds from the west.
Cause of the flooding is unknown at this time, the Coast Guard said.
