PORT ANGELES — Artists of all levels are invited to take part in “Embracing Life through Art . . . the Journey Back,” an exhibition for anyone challenged by cancer.

“There is no jury to say your art is ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’ I’m looking for a heart response of the creative process,” said Sky Heatherton, organizer of the event for three years now.

There is no cost to participate in the art show, which is co-sponsored by its venue, The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave.

Heatherton is accepting applications through next Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 360-461-6546.

She encourages entrants to phone her between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. any day between now and Aug. 28.

Heatherton, a retired hospice nurse, coped with breast cancer by creating paintings, walking sticks and sculpture inspired by the Australian aboriginal style.

She discovered that making art gave her mind relief, as well as a sense of spiritual connection.

Then, in October 2011, Heatherton assembled the first “Embracing Life” show.

By last year, the exhibition had grown to 125 pieces by 35 local artists, filling The Landing’s atrium.

The October 2012 event included a memory wall honoring loved ones who have died, alongside dozens of paintings, sculptures, mixed-media works and a Native American drum.

All arts

Photography, writing, woodworking, ceramics and music are also welcome in this exhibition, Heatherton said.

The show is for artists living anywhere on the North Olympic Peninsula, she noted, adding that she will collect the entries by around Sept. 20.

“People will be able to sell their art without paying a commission” to the show’s organizers, who are all volunteers, Heatherton said.

The Artists’ Studio at The Landing, Assured Hospice and Survivor’s Outdoor Experience, the nonprofit organization run by Jack Ganster, are also supporters of “Embracing Life through Art.”
