OLYMPIA — The state Department of Corrections is looking for a site for a new prison in Western Washington.
It will serve as the first stop for men entering the prison system. They’ll be assessed for level of security and other needs as well as their physical and mental health.
The state Legislature has approved funds to find a building location but has not yet approved construction spending.
The department said Wednesday it hopes to have the 1,024-inmate prison ready by 2016.
The state prison in Shelton currently serves as the reception center.
