State superintendent to speak in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — A community forum with state Superintendent Chris Reykdal is set for 6 p.m. Monday.

The forum will be at the Lincoln Center, 905 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles.

Reykdal looks to outline priorities for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and his vision for transforming education.

“The Legislature has made great strides in education funding,” Reykdal said in a recent news release. “But we can’t continue to use a 10-year-old funding model that was not enough even at the time it was created.

“Our students deserve an education system that does not allow opportunity gaps to persist,” he continued. “That can only happen if our system provides equitable opportunities and individual learning pathways for each student.”

Reykdal, who is scheduled to talk at other forums around the state in Bellingham, Vancouver and Yakima, will speak for about 30 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session.

OSPI is the primary agency charged with overseeing K-12 education in Washington state. OSPI works with the state’s 295 school districts and nine educational service districts to administer basic education programs and improve student achievement on behalf of more than 1 million public school students.
