State Patrol seeks witnesses to fatal car-pedestrian collision

PORT ANGELES — The State Patrol detective investigating the car death of a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 101 in eastern Port Angeles wants to speak with anyone who might have witnessed the incident.

Detective Joi Haner is asking anyone who might have seen the collision that left Bonita N. Bickford, 49, dead or might have seen Bickford crossing the road to call Haner at 360-473-0147.

Bickford reportedly was using a walker while crossing the four-lane highway.

Bickford died at Olympic Medical Center after she was struck by a 1988 Chevy Beretta driven by Marlene Terese Brand, 49, between Golf Course Road and Olympic Lodge at about 8 p.m. Monday.

Brand, of Port Angeles, remained in the Clallam County jail Wednesday on $35,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned on a vehicular homicide charge today at 3 p.m. in Clallam County Superior Court.

Brand’s blood-alcohol level was 0.124 percent, 1½ times the legal limit, when she was arrested after the collision, according to State Patrol accounts.

Bickford was crossing U.S. 101 from south to north with a walker when she was struck by Brand, who was driving westbound in the right lane, according to State Patrol accounts.
