Standoff with armed man ends

PORT ANGELES — A standoff between an armed man and federal and local law enforcement officers ended today more than 22 hours after it began when a FBI SWAT team fired tear gas into his home on the Lower Elwha Klallam reservation.

Peter Stephan III, 41, was arrested when he ran out of the home after the tear gas was fired at about 2:30 p.m. on Ranger Road, said FBI spokesman Special Agent Fred Gutt.

Stephan was arrested on a warrant for assault in connection with the initial 9-1-1 call, he said.

He will make an appearance in federal court in Tacoma on Monday.

The standoff began at about 4 p.m. Wednesday when Lower Elhwa Klallam police heard shots fired from the home when they arrived on a domestic disturbance call, Gutt said.

The shots are believed to have been fired to prevent the police officers from approaching the house, he said, and no one was shot.

Gutt said Stephan’s wife and 18-year-old daughter left the home shortly afterward.

He did not know if they were injured in the domestic disturbance.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Department deputies also assisted the FBI and tribal police.
