POULSBO — The Roughriders are looking to make school history and at the same time to fill up the stands Saturday afternoon in a makeup dual meet when they take on two-time defending Olympic League champion Klahowya.

Port Angeles has never won the league championship in program history.

After easily beating the Vikings in league dual-meet action Wednesday night, the Riders sat at 5-0 in league and 9-0 overall.

They still had a league double-dual Thursday night at Port Townsend against the Redskins and Bremerton, results not available by press time, but they were heavily favored to win those two meets.

That would lead up to the historic meeting with powerhouse Klahowya on Saturday. Varsity action is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Prior to varsity, JV action starts at 1 p.m. followed by Senior recognition at about 1:45 p.m.

“We hope to fill the stands for that one,” Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez said.

Against the Vikings, the Riders earned four pins in a row starting at 160 pounds and had falls in five of the final six matches to easily put the meet away.

Earning pins were Kacee Garner at 160, Nick Lasorsa at 170, Brian Cristion at 182, Zach Grall at 195 and Michael Myers at 285.

The Riders also were awarded two forfeits and Brady Anderson received an injury default for six points at 113.

Blake Meldrum won a major decision for the Riders at 126 as he beat Erick Powell 12-0.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins took advantage of an injury-riddled Sequim squad in Olympic League action Wednesday night.

“Sequim had holes in their lineup because of injuries this past week,” Port Townsend coach Stephen Grimm said.

On the other hand, the Redskins came out on fire.

“We had a dedication to longtime coach Joey Johnson before the match, and then the kids came out and wrestled hard,” Grimm said.

Johnson was honored for his 20 years of coaching the Redskins (see photo on Page B9).

Johnson retired from coaching at the end of last season.

Earning pins for the Redskins were Justin Mead at 126 pounds, Addison Harper at 132, Dillon Ralls at 138 and Ty Leeper at 170.

For the Wolves, Dakota Hinton won by fall at 195, Mickey Cobb won by a technical fall at 106 and Jacob Cooper also won by pin.

“Our numbers were pretty thin [Wednesday night],” Sequim coach Len Borchers said.

“We have a couple more matches before the divisional meet in a couple of weeks, and we will try to be ready for that.”

The Redskins still have a makeup meet with Kingston that hasn’t been set up yet.

Bremerton 51, Sequim 27

PORT TOWNSEND — The Wolves, with their limited lineup, had to take on the Knights in a makeup dual meet at Port Townsend on Wednesday night.

“We had a pretty lean match against the Knights,” coach Len Borchers said.

“We had to forfeit six weight-class matches and also had two injuries to deal with.”

Dakota Hinton pinned his opponent for two falls on the night.

In other highlights, Clay Charley won by fall at 285 and Mickey Cobb earned a pin at 106.
